A dozen brave folks competed in the Buffalo Wild Wings eating competition held Saturday (Aug. 30) during festivities for the Kankakee Power Boat Nationals. The first two to finish their plateful of wings then faced off in the final round. The winner, Lance Keller, of Bradley, accepted his trophy -- and then gulped beer out of it -- after his competitor, Jeremy Stam, of Kankakee, conceded about three minutes into the five-minute finale.

The Cardboard Boat Races have been an annual event at the Kankakee Power Boat Nationals. Competitors get the same materials -- sheets of cardboard, Duct tape and plastic sheeting -- and have a couple hours to build a boat, which they then actually put to the test on the Kankakee River. Most of the vessels aren't seaworthy, but that's one of the reasons it's fun to watch.

The 2008 Powerboat Nationals were held Labor Day weekend on the Kankakee River. Here are some photos I took of the festivities. I also took pictures of the racing boats, the cardboard boats, and the Buffalo Wild Wing Eating Contest. Look for those <a href=here. At the breakfast, Kankakee Mayor Don Green and his wife, Dr. Kay Green, announced that United Way of Kankakee County would be seeking to raise $1,025,000 this year. The Greens are co-chairs for the 2008-2009 campaign. Then nearly 150 female golfers and their caddies headed out onto a soggy Bon Vivant north course for 9 holes of golf.
